Today I am going to write about something other than my experiences with MS. Today I am going to share with you a story of a devastating tragedy that stuck members of my hometown. I am sharing it with you because I want it to put us all into action. I want to inspire you to put pen to paper. I first wish to extend my deepest condolences to the Amann and Hicks families. The loss of their angel Jaedyn is heartbreaking and I know words are of little solace at this time. However, it is my hope that each of you that read these words takes action. Help us prevent number 95 from ever occurring.
On July 4th, 2012, on the Watson Lake Secondary School soccer field in the Yukon Territory, 5-year-old, Jaedyn Amann Hicks was struck in the back of the head by the crossbar of a poorly maintained, unanchored, collapsible soccer net at approximately 5:00 PM. A fellow playmate, aged 3 years and weighing roughly 30 lbs., merely leaned against one of the upright posts, causing the buckling action that led to the net’s collapse. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Jaedyn succumbed to her injuries and passed away at approximately 8:00 PM.
The loss of a life is always devastating, unimaginable and senseless. The loss of a child magnifies these feelings ten fold. This loss is certainly no different. This precious 5 year old child, with the world at her finger tips, has left this world well before her time. In the weeks since this tragedy it has come to light that it is not an isolated incident. Jaedyn`s name has taken its place at number 94 on the list of reported, seriously injured or deceased due to soccer net casualties since 1979. We cannot not let another name be placed on this list; we must not let Jaedyn`s passing be in vain. The families of this beautiful little girl want to give this tragedy meaning. They want to prevent another family from having to deal with this heart crushing reality.
How can you help you ask? Sign the petition that urges our leaders to act now to pass and implement ‘Jaedyn’s Law’. It is proposed that Jaedyn’s Law mandates that sporting nets across Canada be sufficiently anchored, banning collapsible nets on government (provincial and municipal) operated play fields and be routinely inspected and maintained.
Please help prevent this unspeakable tragedy from occurring again. Visit jaedynslaw.com and help prevent number 95 from occurring. Together we can do more than just end MS. We can rally around this family and help give this tragedy meaning. We can help Jaedyn’s Law be passed and implemented!
The Amann and Hicks families have given permission for the pictures of Jaedyn to be published.
